˗ˏˋAllusionˎˊ˗

Hey! How are you during this long term quarantine? I hope you're doing fine and healthy. This quarantine makes me feel like I've been trapped in a tall tower for a dozen years. Doesn't it sound like an allusion? But what is an allusion?

So currently, I have learned a new subject in the English subject. It is 'allusion'. According to the zoom meeting last Tuesday, an allusion is a brief reference to a person, thing, place, idea, or a cultural, historical, literary, or political significance. The allusion I said before was a reference from a German fairy tale, 'Rapunzel'. An allusion is intended to make an indirect connection between two contexts. It is also used to simplify some complex ideas or emotions of the writer. There are four types of allusion. There are mythology, religion, literature, and pop culture.

We were assigned to find an allusion in a song and describe it in a paragraph or two. I decided to pick it from one of my favorite songs. The song I pick for this assignment is 'Lost Boy' by Ruth B.

I am a lost boy from Neverland
Usually hanging out with Peter Pan
And when we bored we play in the woods
Always on the run from Captain Hook
"Run, run, lost boy", they said to me
Away from all of reality

This whole song is inspired by the story of Peter Pan, a fictional character from Barrie's The Little White Bird novel. He is known by a free-spirited boy who can fly and never grows up. He is the leader of the 'Lost Boys' and lived in a mystical island named Neverland. Peter Pan is symbolizing youthful innocence and escapism. In this song, Peter Pan is referred to as something that can make you escape from all the reality that you don't want and you can't handle.

Sometimes we don't always have all the good times in life and feel so lost. But in this song, Ruth B wanted us to find our 'Peter Pan' that can lead us. It can be a person, a passion, or other things you love. So when you feel tired and lost, that's where you find yourself again. That's where you can away from all the stressing reality and be in your own space for a while.

We cannot understand the meanings and the emotions that the writer of the song wanted to tell in the lyrics if we don't have any knowledge about the reference that the writer used. So if you want to dig up into the deeper meaning of the song, you have to search for more information that related to the lyrics. Allusion makes the song sounds more aesthetic and unique even though it is from some complex ideas.
